Viking Motors car wash ventilation with heat recovery

At the car wash of Viking Motors' Ülemiste dealership, we installed a ventilation system with heat recovery based on a plate heat exchanger, which solved the problem of winter fog and humidity. Before the ventilation unit, the extracted air passes through the OUF liquid separator based on centrifugal force, which reduces the risk of freezing in frosty conditions. Both wash bays can be controlled separately, and the entire automation was designed individually for this car wash.

Project challenge

The main problem was the fog caused by high humidity and cold during cold weather, as well as maintaining the general temperature and ventilation of the wash rooms. The new solution had to feature heat recovery and be efficient. Proper ventilation additionally helps dry out a very humid room and thereby does not have a destructive effect on the building either.

How we built it

We built a ventilation system based on a plate heat exchanger, in which the operation of both wash rooms could be controlled separately. To control the humidity and freezing of the extracted air, we installed a centrifugal liquid separator OUF before the ventilation unit. All the automation and its logic were designed personally for this car wash, also making it possible to avoid human errors, such as the system running empty at times when no work is taking place.

  • Ventilation system with heat recovery based on a plate heat exchanger
  • Centrifugal liquid separator OUF to reduce the humidity of the extract air
  • Separate control of the two wash rooms
  • Automation and control logic created personally for this car wash

What we achieved

  • The winter fog and humidity problem in severe frost was solved
  • All extracted air passes through the liquid separator OUF, which reduces the humidity and liquid content and the risk of freezing in winter
  • A stable temperature and dryness of the premises are ensured
  • Both wash rooms can be controlled separately
  • The automation prevents human errors, such as running empty
  • Heat recovery protects the building from the destructive effects of moisture

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does the system solve the winter fog and humidity problem?
We built a plate heat exchanger-based ventilation system with heat recovery that maintains a stable temperature and dryness in the rooms. This solved the winter fog and humidity problem even in severe frost.
How is the humidity and freezing risk of the exhaust air reduced?
We installed a centrifugal liquid separator OUF before the ventilation unit. All exhaust air passes through it, which reduces moisture and liquid content and the risk of freezing in winter.
Can both wash rooms be controlled separately?
Yes, the system is built so that each wash room can be controlled separately. This provides flexibility according to the needs of each room.
Does the automation help avoid unnecessary energy use?
Yes, all automation and control logic was created specifically for this car wash. It avoids human errors, such as the system running empty when no work is being done.
How does the solution protect the building from moisture?
Proper ventilation with heat recovery helps dry the very humid space and ensures a stable temperature. This protects the building from the devastating effects of moisture.
