Whether to continue shot blasting your production manually or acquire a shot blasting machine – this is a question that many metal manufacturers have faced at some point.
What exactly is a shot blasting machine?
A shot blasting machine contains turbines that propel abrasive onto products at speeds of up to 70 m/sec. The turbines are designed to propel abrasive from every side at different angles, so that all surfaces, welds and also internal areas are sufficiently treated.
Various conveyor solutions can be used to transport the products, such as roller conveyors or overhead conveyors.
After the process, all resulting dust and abrasive is removed from the products using brushes or a high-pressure vacuum cleaner. The air environment of the shot blasting machine is cleaned by a cartridge secondary filter, from which the cleaned air is directed back into production.
Shot blasting machines are available in both pass-through and chamber types, the latter taking up less space. Nevertheless, this is a technology that requires a customer-specific approach to ensure the right equipment selection.
Even for slightly larger production volumes, shot blasting machines are extremely justified.
Advantages of shot blasting machines:
- The shot blasting speed can easily be approx. 2 m/min. All sides are treated at once – there is no need to turn the product over in between.
- A result of up to Sa 3 is easily guaranteed.
- The difference in working speed compared to manual shot blasting is up to 40-fold!
- Shot blasting uses round abrasive, which lasts up to 2000 cycles. This is up to 5 times more than the crushed abrasive used in manual shot blasting.
- The shot blasting machine operator can manage the shot blasting process alongside other tasks.
- Due to the absence of the human factor, consistent quality can be assured.
- A shot blasting machine does not require a heated room – it is only necessary to ensure dry air.
- Shot blasted steel sheets and profiles are intended for extremely high-quality prepared plasma and gas cutting as well as welding – no slag or poor-quality cutting marks occur, and the welding is of higher quality and stronger.
- The shot blasting process also reduces subsequent grinding, which is in turn expensive, time-consuming and additional work that soils the working environment.
- A shot blasting machine does not require a powerful compressor to produce compressed air, and a shot blasting machine consumes approx. 2 times less electrical power.
