Gloss and Color Tone Measuring Instruments

The correct gloss level has a significant impact on both the product and its colour. The quality of a painted surface is often assessed by measuring gloss and tone

Gloss and reflectivity

Visual appearance can determine how a person perceives a product. Colour and gloss are two key parameters used to define the overall quality of a product. Perception is subjective, but the Elcometer range of gloss meters, DOI meters and colour assessment instruments enables appearance to be quantified in a measurable way.

The ability of a surface to reflect light without scattering it is called gloss. A gloss meter measures gloss by directing a light beam of uniform intensity at a specific angle onto the surface being measured, and then monitoring the amount of light reflected at the same angle. Different surfaces require different reflection angles.

The ability of a material to absorb light of certain wavelengths and reflect others defines its colour. For example, a black material does not reflect light across the entire colour spectrum. A pure white material reflects all light, while all other colours reflect light at various points in the spectrum. Colour is quantified through the red, green and blue (RGB) values of a material.
