Electrostatic powder coating involves handling fire- and explosion-hazardous powder-air mixtures. Existing risks must be recognised and taken into account already at the equipment design stage.
The main risks include fire hazard inside the booth, fire hazard in open filters, and explosion hazard in separators (cyclone + filter). These risks arise from combustible powder particles that are extracted from the booth through the ducting.

For example, during the cleaning of filter elements, swirled-up powder particles may ignite. This can cause the filter to burst and pose a significant hazard to both people and equipment.
