Automatic activated carbon filter at Viljandi Aken ja Uks production facility – air 85% cleaner
We installed an automatic activated carbon-based ventilation solution at the production facility of the timber manufacturer Viljandi Aken ja Uks, capturing volatile organic compounds from the air. The system consists of two parallel carbon filters, one of which is always in operation while the other awaits its turn after carbon reactivation. The purity of the ambient air improved by 85% compared to before, and in testing even 99.8% was achieved. The solution enables the company to increase production volumes and remain within environmental standards.

The project challenge
Viljandi Aken ja Uks employs 700 people, and the annual production capacity of the group's companies totals 700,000 units with a turnover of nearly 100 million euros. Wood finishing uses materials containing volatile organic compounds (paints, primers, solvents, stains) that can cause odour nuisance and impair the air quality of the surroundings. With large production volumes, the treatment of chemicals evaporating into the air became an increasingly greater challenge, especially as the industry is located near a residential area.
How we built it
In the coating and drying process, we introduced an automatic activated carbon filter that absorbs harmful compounds evaporating into the air, releasing purified air from the filter. The activated carbon granules installed in the ventilation system capture the necessary compounds. The solution was chosen in accordance with the action plan for reducing volatile organic compounds drawn up together with the Environmental Board. The entire system operates fully automatically and can be controlled remotely – when one filter fills up, another automatically switches on, ensuring uninterrupted reliability.

The heating system at Nordwood's production facility was upgraded with three Metmann water-heated industrial air curtains. The units circulate air within the space at up to 25,000 m³/h, ensuring uniform heat and reducing the inflow of cold air through continuously open doors. The solution improved working conditions and also reduced energy consumption.
