Two-stage humidification system for a woodworking plant

In autumn 2019, we upgraded the humidification system at Palmako's Kavastu factory, building a two-stage humidification zone based on a piping solution that prevents the air from becoming oversaturated with water. The control system was equipped with an automatic start function (up to five restarts within 24 hours), and to ensure water quality, a water softening filter and an iron filter were added. The result is a stable humidity level in the production building and a reduced risk of technical problems.

Project challenge

Maintaining precise humidity levels is very important to the client, but there was an occasional risk that the supply water pressure would drop too low and the system would shut down. In addition, the specific characteristics of the factory's technology and active air exchange in one corner of the factory had to be taken into account, which required a special solution to prevent air oversaturation.

How we built it

We installed a pipe-based humidification system with several technical features that are not normally included. The entire zone was built as a two-stage system — if the first stage is unable to maintain the humidity level, the control automation also activates the second system, ensuring that the air does not become oversaturated with water. The control system was equipped with an automatic restart function that attempts to restart a system shut down by an alarm up to five times within 24 hours. If the system goes into alarm for the sixth time, it requires staff intervention — at which point the problem is likely no longer related to water pressure. To reduce problems arising from water quality, we added supplementary filters to the set.

We expanded and adapted the previously installed air humidification system at the Barrus AS glulam plant for a new three-zone warehouse building. In addition, we installed a water softening system that keeps maintenance costs almost non-existent and ensures the long-term efficiency of the system. The system is expandable to the rest of the production facilities.
