The adhesion strength of paint and surface coatings is crucial for the material to fulfil its protective and decorative function. Testing the strength of surface coatings in the paint and coating industry is essential to ensure product quality and durability.
Adhesion strength testing is required in accordance with standards ISO 4624, ISO 2409 (cross-cut test) and ASTM D4541, and forms an important part of surface coating quality control before a product is placed on the market.
Adhesion Strength Measurement Methods- Pull-off test – attaches a test dolly to the surface and pulls it off with a measured force; provides an accurate numerical value in units of N/mm² or MPa (ISO 4624, ASTM D4541)
- Cross-cut test – cuts a grid into the coating layer and visually assesses flaking on a scale of 0–5 (ISO 2409)
- X-cut test – used for thin coatings (ASTM D3359)
The Elcometer 108 and 510 pull-off adhesion testers are the world's leading solutions for measuring adhesion strength in both production and laboratory conditions. The hydraulic pull mechanism ensures a consistent and accurate pull force, eliminating user errors. Results are recorded in the ElcoMaster application.
