Environmental measuring instruments

The measurement of climatic parameters such as relative humidity, air temperature and dew point is a crucial factor that directly influences the quality of coatings. Incorrect control of environmental conditions during application is one of the main reasons why coatings fail prematurely.

Elcometer's environmental measuring instruments allow you to quickly and accurately check that painting conditions meet paint manufacturer requirements and standards such as ISO 8502-4 and SSPC-PA 1.

What is measured and why

  • Relative humidity - if the humidity is too high, condensation can form on the surface, preventing the paint from adhering properly.
  • Dewpoint - the surface temperature must be at least 3°C above the dew point to avoid condensation of moisture.
  • Air and surface temperature - both affect the drying and adhesion of the paint layer
  • Difference on the surface and around - delta T indicates the risk of condensation

Why is it mandatory to measure environmental conditions before painting?

All standards for the application of coatings (ISO 8502-4, SSPC-PA 1, NACE) require documentation of environmental conditions. Excessively high humidity, excessively low temperatures or surface temperatures below the dew point prevent the paint from adhering properly, causing bubbling, flaking and premature corrosion.

What is the dew point and how to measure it?

The dew point is the temperature at which, as it cools, moisture begins to condense from the air onto the surface. It depends on the air temperature and the relative humidity. Elcometer equipment automatically calculates the dew point based on measured values and indicates whether the surface temperature meets the required delta T value (minimum +3°C).

How often do measurements have to be taken during the production process?

The standards require measurements to be taken before work starts, during the work (every 4 hours or as conditions change) and after the work is finished. Mobile devices with Bluetooth connectivity allow continuous logging, which greatly simplifies reporting.

What is the difference between a psychrometer and an electronic environmental measuring device?

Psychrometers are traditional water-humidification instruments that require manual calculation. Electronic instruments are more accurate, faster and allow automatic recording and transmission of data. Electronic solutions are overwhelmingly more desirable in a manufacturing environment.
