Powder coating is the most common and environmentally friendly coating method used in the metal industry today. Unlike liquid painting, powder coating does not contain solvents - meaning lower environmental impact, less material loss and a more durable end result. A properly designed powder coating system ensures consistent quality, optimised energy consumption and long life for both parts and equipment.

What is powder coating?

Powder painting is an electrostatic painting method where the paint is sprayed onto the surface of the part in powder form and then melted in an oven to form a strong, uniform coating. The powder particles are electrostatically charged (typically -60 to -110 kV), which causes the powder to adhere to the surface of the part and cover hard-to-reach areas. Excess powder is recovered for reuse - a typical powder saturation is between 95-99%.

Advantages of powder coating over liquid coating

• Solvent-free and environmentally friendly - does not contain VOCs, does not require special ventilation for exhaust gases.
• High material savings - up to 99% powder can be re-used.
• Durable coating - mechanically strong, corrosion, UV and chemical resistant.
• Suitable layer thickness with one layer - typically 60-120 µm, single application.
• Wide choice of colours and finishes - matt, glossy, textured, metallic, antimicrobial, etc.
• Fast production cycle - powdering and baking together typically 20-40 minutes.

Key steps in the powder coating process

1. Pre-wash and surface preparation - degreasing, rinsing, conversion coating (phosphate or Zr coating), demineralised water rinsing.
2. Drying - the water is removed from the surface of the part coming out of the washing zone before the powder is applied.
3. Application of powder coating - handguns (in hand-held booth) or automatic guns (in Magic booth), electrostatic charging.
4. Powder recovery - Excess powder is recovered for reuse by a filter or cyclone system.
5. Baking - The detail is transferred to the oven (typically 160-200 °C, 10-25 min), where the powder melts into a solid coating.
6. Cooling and control - the detail is cooled and a quality check is carried out (layer thickness, gloss, colour tone).
