Elcometer coating thickness gauges
Powder layer comb
The Elcometer 155 powder comb measures the thickness of the powder coating layer prior to curing, helping to optimise application and reduce waste. Suitable for metal, plastic, wood and glass.
The Elcometer 155 powder comb is specially designed for measuring powder coating thickness prior to the curing process. It allows fine-tuning of the application system, reducing waste, overspray and residue — while ensuring a more consistent final result.
Principle of operation
Place the comb on the freshly applied powder surface and gently slide it along the surface. The sharp teeth allow the powder to flow around them without removing it, leaving a visible drag mark. Read the last tooth where the mark is visible — this gives the approximate powder thickness before curing.
Note: the coating thickness before curing differs from the cured surface value — the comb provides an indicative guideline for process optimisation.
Technical features
- Tolerance — ±5 microns or ±0.0002 inches
- Wide straight edges on both sides of the teeth help keep the comb perpendicular to the surface
- Suitable substrates — metal, plastic, wood, glass and others
- Does not remove powder — measurement does not damage the surface
- Compact and lightweight — convenient to use on the production line
Why use a powder comb?
- Optimise the application system before curing
- Reduce waste and overspray
- Ensure a more consistent powder coating and better adhesion
- Avoid costly over- or under-coating
