A scratch tester is a tool used to test the strength and adhesion of a given surface by scratching dry painted surfaces. It consists of a set of parallel blades which, when pulled twice perpendicularly, produce 25 or 100 identical squares. After the area has been cut, running the tape or the stiffer brush supplied over it will show how deep the surface will allow the scratches to form. Repeating the operation will change the depth.

The PosiTest adhesion tester measures the force that can be used to remove a test coating of a given diameter from the surface to be tested by applying hydraulic pressure. Similar to MPa, the pressure in PSI is indicated on the LCD indicator, which can be the same as the adhesion force for a given surface.
