Frequently asked questions

What is a thickness gauge and when do you need one?

A coating thickness gauge is a device that measures the thickness of a layer of paint, varnish or other coating on a substrate without damaging the surface. It is needed whenever it is necessary to check whether the coated surface meets the specifications and standards of the paint manufacturer (e.g. ISO 19840, ISO 2178). An inadequate coating will cause corrosion, while too thick a coating will cause cracking and peeling.

What is the difference between magnetic and current conductivity based layer thickness measurement?

The magnetic measuring principle is suitable for measuring non-magnetic coatings on a ferromagnetic substrate (e.g. painted steel). The method based on current conductivity is suitable for measuring non-magnetic materials (aluminium, copper, stainless steel). Dual-mode instruments (e.g. Elcometer 456) automatically detect the base and switch the method accordingly.

How to choose the right measuring instrument for your production environment?

The choice has to take into account the material to be measured (ferromagnetic vs. non-ferromagnetic substrate), the required accuracy, the production conditions (temperature, humidity, vibration) and the need for data management. Elister can help you to make the right choice during a free consultation - contact one of our specialists.

Do measuring instruments need to be calibrated and how often?

Yes, regular calibration is a requirement of good measurement practice. In a production environment, it is recommended to calibrate at the beginning of each working day against a zero plate and a standard plate of known thickness. For official certification, the instrument must be calibrated in an accredited laboratory according to ISO 19840 or other applicable standard.

What is ElcoMaster software and what is it useful for?

ElcoMaster is Elcometer's software platform that allows you to transfer data from your meter to a PC or mobile device, analyse the results, automatically generate inspection reports and share them with your customers. It reduces manual reporting down to 70% and minimises human errors in data entry.
